Mesothelioma is almost exclusively caused by asbestos exposure — and asbestos has been found in talcum powder products used by millions. Here is what the science says and what it means for claimants in the UK.
What Is Mesothelioma?
Mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive form of cancer that develops in the mesothelium — the thin layer of tissue that lines the lungs, abdomen, heart, and other internal organs. The most common form, pleural mesothelioma, affects the lining of the lungs and accounts for the majority of cases. Peritoneal mesothelioma, which develops in the abdominal lining, is the second most common type. The disease is almost always fatal, with most patients surviving between 12 and 21 months after diagnosis. There is no known cure, though treatments can help manage symptoms and extend survival.
The Asbestos Connection
Mesothelioma is almost exclusively caused by exposure to asbestos. Unlike many cancers with multiple contributing factors, the link between asbestos and mesothelioma is one of the most clearly established causal relationships in occupational and environmental medicine. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) classifies asbestos as a Group 1 carcinogen — the highest classification, indicating sufficient evidence of carcinogenicity in humans. There is no established safe threshold for asbestos exposure; even small amounts can be dangerous, particularly over sustained periods.
How Asbestos Gets Into Talcum Powder
Talc and asbestos are both naturally occurring silicate minerals that form in similar geological conditions. In many mining locations around the world, talc deposits sit alongside or are interspersed with asbestos deposits, including tremolite — one of six recognised types of asbestos. When talc is mined and processed without adequate separation and testing, the resulting talcum powder can contain asbestos fibres. Johnson & Johnson's internal documents reveal that the company was aware of this risk as early as the 1950s. A 1969 internal memo noted that tremolite could no longer be guaranteed absent from their talc products and that the mineral's safety had not been established.
The Long Latency Period
One of the most insidious aspects of mesothelioma is its latency period. The gap between initial asbestos exposure and the onset of disease can span 20 to 50 years. This means that someone who regularly used asbestos-contaminated talcum powder in the 1970s, 1980s, or 1990s may only now be developing symptoms. This long delay also explains why the full scale of the talc scandal is still unfolding — new diagnoses continue to emerge decades after exposure. The latency period makes early legal advice particularly important, as limitation periods run from the date of diagnosis or knowledge, not the date of exposure.
Landmark Mesothelioma Verdicts
Courts have awarded some of the largest talcum powder verdicts in mesothelioma cases, reflecting the severity of the disease and the strength of the causal evidence. In December 2025, a Maryland jury awarded $1.5 billion to a woman diagnosed with mesothelioma linked to Johnson & Johnson talc products — one of the largest individual verdicts in the history of talc litigation. That same month, a Minnesota jury awarded $65.5 million to another mesothelioma patient. These verdicts demonstrate that juries recognise the devastating impact of asbestos-contaminated talc and are willing to hold manufacturers accountable with substantial damages.
Mesothelioma and the UK Group Action
The UK legal claim against Johnson & Johnson, estimated to be worth more than £1 billion, explicitly includes mesothelioma alongside ovarian cancer and other conditions. The claim covers the period from 1965 to 2023 and alleges that J&J knew their talc products contained carcinogenic fibres, including asbestos, for more than fifty years. Jones Whyte is leading the group action in the Scottish Court of Session, representing claimants who developed mesothelioma and other asbestos-related diseases after using J&J talcum powder products.
Mesothelioma claims can be particularly strong because the causal link between asbestos and the disease is so well established scientifically. Unlike ovarian cancer, where defendants sometimes dispute the association with talc, mesothelioma is recognised as a signature asbestos disease. This means that if asbestos-contaminated talc was the source of exposure, the scientific basis for the claim is difficult to challenge.
If You or a Loved One Has Been Diagnosed
If you have been diagnosed with mesothelioma and have a history of using talcum powder products, it is vital to seek legal advice as soon as possible. Given the severity of mesothelioma and the typical prognosis, time is of the essence — both for medical reasons and because limitation periods apply in Scotland. Family members can also pursue claims on behalf of loved ones who have passed away from mesothelioma.
Jones Whyte offers no win, no fee representation for mesothelioma and talcum powder claims. Our team understands the urgency these cases require and works to progress claims as quickly as possible.
